Investing in local food supply

When we talk about what we want to see on our plates, Quebecers have no shortage of ideas. Especially if it’s about how to grow fruits and vegetables, even in winter!

To do this, companies are implementing innovative solutions. Modern greenhouses are appearing in many Québec regions and passionate people are growing fruits and vegetables year-round.

A Hydro-Québec initiative

Research to support growing food

It takes energy to grow fruits and vegetables in a greenhouse. Even more so with winters like ours! That’s why the researchers at Hydro-Québec’s research center (CRHQ) are interested in the topic.

By participating in university research projects, we want to help develop methods to optimize energy management in Québec greenhouses.

With the brand-new experimental greenhouse at Hydro-Québec’s energy technology laboratory (LTE) in Shawinigan, we will also be able to test technologies that will improve the efficiency of using electricity for lighting and heating greenhouses.

Growing plants year-round

To grow fruits, vegetables and plants year-round in Québec, you need good lighting and the right temperature. That’s why we offer a rate option that enables greenhouse growers to heat their greenhouses and use photosynthetic lighting in an efficient and sustainable manner and at a lower price.

The $12 challenge

What if, every week, in a restaurant or at the grocery store, we replaced $12 of food from outside Québec with $12 of locally produced food? By doing so, we would be encouraging Québec's bio-food industry and supporting the local economy. Everybody wins!
